The Program

Since IIP’s inception in 1979, our program has facilitated cultural exchange visits to almost 17,000 schools worldwide. Although the world has changed a great deal in that time, the core aim of the program has always remained the same – to provide a means by which people can come together for the sharing of knowledge, skills and friendship. The idea of the program is very simple: a single participant visits a school community and together the two sides create a program of cultural enrichment. The majority of visits are self-funded and the visitor gives their time voluntarily to the school in return for the experience and insights they gain. Ideally, the visitor will have the opportunity to homestay with a family or household within the school community – for which they will of course pay.

Each visit is therefore based on a unique set of circumstances. The topics and themes explored during a visit will reflect the individual needs and interests of the school and visitor. IIP’s role is to bring the two sides together by seeking the best possible match and then providing the support to make it all happen. Flexibility is the key – in essence, our program offers a framework on which to build an enriching and rewarding exchange for the greatest mutual benefit.

Who are the visitors?

teaching kids

Our participants come from diverse backgrounds. Many are experienced, qualified teachers while others are training for careers in education. In addition, many college students and recent graduates from a variety of academic fields join us and, finally, we have people with a wide range of professional and life experience who also participate in the program.

All are committed to sharing their culture and language with the world and promoting exchange. Through the program they will gain valuable insights into other cultures and education systems while experiencing first-hand a different way of life – all of which will go on to inform their lives and careers back in Japan.
